What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax is India's indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. It's collected at each stage of the supply chain, and registered businesses get credit for the GST they paid on purchases (input tax credit).

How GST is calculated

Adding GST: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100 and total = amount + GST. Removing GST from an inclusive price: taxable value = amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate) and GST = amount − taxable value.

CGST vs SGST vs IGST

For a sale within one state, GST is split equally into Central GST and State GST — 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For a sale from one state to another, the whole amount is Integrated GST (IGST).

Examples

₹10,000 + 18% GST = ₹1,800 GST, total ₹11,800 (₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST within the state). ₹1,180 including 18% GST = ₹1,000 taxable value + ₹180 GST.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST rates in India?

Since 22 September 2025 the main rates are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, with special low rates for some goods (for example 3% on gold and 0.25% on rough diamonds). Tobacco products and pan masala stay at 28% plus compensation cess until that cess ends. Always check the rate notified for your HSN code.

Is GST charged on the discounted price?

Yes, if the discount is shown on the invoice at the time of sale, GST is on the price after discount.

How are paise rounded?

Tax is rounded to the nearest paisa; when split into CGST and SGST, any odd paisa goes to SGST so the halves always add up.
