How a GSTIN is built
Digits 1–2: state code. 3–12: the PAN of the business. 13: entity number for that PAN in the state. 14: usually Z. 15: a check character calculated from the first 14.
Format check vs verification
A valid format means the number is correctly formed and the check digit matches — it catches typos. It does not confirm that the GSTIN is registered or active. To confirm that, use “Search Taxpayer” on the official GST portal.
